What’s your motive for:

  • “doing the right thing”?
  • going to church?
  • reading your Bible?

Is it because somebody has told you to? Read Mark 7: 1-23 (see; I recommend the New Living Translation). Portions of the footnote for verse 6 from the Full Life Study Bible say: “A legalist substitutes outward acts or words for proper inner attitudes that come from being born of God and the Spirit….Such people honor God with their lips, while their hearts are far from him; they appear righteous outwardly, but inwardly have no real love for God…..Legalism…has to do with motives – the motives by which the Christian approaches God’s will as expressed in his Word,” (emphasis mine).

This is a serious portion of verses to read. The footnotes open it up even further to our understanding and reveal the seriousness of it. I challenge you to look closely at your own motives. I have for myself.  It has caused me to move even closer to a genuine walk with my Father. I’m praying it will for you, too.
