provision

May 3, 2013

1 Kings 17:8-16 shows that God doesn’t care where you’re from, what you have believed in, or what the color of your skin is. It’s about where you are right now. His provision came to a Gentile widow in an idol-worshiping culture who was willing to be obedient to a simple instruction from His servant Elijah.

One question I have when I read verse 12 is: How did she know that Elijah served God?  “ ‘As surely as the Lord your God lives,” she replied, “I don’t have any bread…’ ” (NIV, emphasis mine).  She lived in the heart of Baal country.  She dared to believe that Elijah’s God might really exist.

Note there was no sign of doubt or fear in her actions.  Here is verse 15 from The Voice: “She did exactly as Elijah had instructed her to do, and everyone who lived in her house had food for days.”

Her obedience brought provision. “The Lord kept the promise that his prophet Elijah had made, and she did not run out of flour or oil.” (verse 16, CEV)  Her obedience saved both her life and the life of her son.

Note:  Obedience does not mean a lack of problems.  But that’s for another day…..
