God’s love covers us

September 9, 2013

1 Peter 4:8 (PHILLIPS)
“Above everything else be sure that you have real deep love for each other, remembering how ‘love will cover a multitude of sins’.”

Although this verse is dealing with interpersonal human relationships, we need to look at the source and example of that love. “We love because God first loved us.” (1 John 4:19, ERV) His love is our example. Just as a child learns by the example of the parents, we learn how to love by how our Father loves us. We’re not able to cover the sins of those we’re in relationship with in our own doing. We had the example of that by how Daddy has loved us.

Are you able to remember a time when you were chilled to the bone? Do you recall how wonderful it felt when you were finally covered with a warm coat or blanket? That is a perfect word picture of how we’re chilled to the bone because we lived in the frigid, barren land of “Me”. Our selfishness ruled our life. It’s a lonely way to exist. When we found out that God loved us enough to send His only Son to pay the price for our wrong stuff (aka: sin) it was like we saw this thick, inviting quilt that could cover us. Then when we asked Him to forgive us for all of our bad behavior (sins) and welcomed Him into our life, we immediately felt His warmth cover us. It was better than a blanket that’s just been brought out from a warmer because it came from His very heart.

After we’ve lived under this cozy shelter long enough to begin to grow in this new relationship, we’re finally able to look around and see there are others who are acting as selfishly as we still do. But now since we have accepted the shroud of His love, we literally have it in us so we can go to the person that’s acting out of a cold heart and cover them with our love. We didn’t have that ability when we were shivering, but we do now that we’ve begun to experience the precious love of our Father.

His love covers us with a forgiving relationship, so now we can do the same with others.
