Nehemiah was including himself when he said, “Come, let’s rebuild the wall of Jerusalem so we won’t be full of shame any longer.” He was including himself in both the physical labor that would be involved, as well as he didn’t want to be full of shame any more regarding the condition of his city. Even though he served the king in the palace, probably wore nice clothes, was accustomed to beauty all around him, he was willing to get filthy along with these impoverished “rejects” the enemy had thrown away like trash.  This shows me his heart really was for God and His people.  Later on in Nehemiah it states that he didn’t even take from the king what previous governors had, but paid for an enormous spread of food to be served at his table daily.  He was not a selfish, self-centered, money-grubbing man, but one who had his priorities in the right place.
